What Is a 2x2 Photo?

A 2x2 photo (2 inches wide by 2 inches high, or 51mm x 51mm) is the standard biometric photograph size required by the US Department of State for all US Passport applications, non-immigrant visas (DS-160), immigrant visas (DS-260), Diversity Visa (DV) Green Card lottery entries, and Indian OCI/Visa cards.

Official US Visa & Passport Photo Specifications

To ensure your 2x2 photo is accepted on the first attempt, it must meet these official criteria:

  • Dimensions: Exactly 2x2 inches (51x51 mm) or 600x600 pixels at 300 DPI.
  • Head Proportions: From the bottom of the chin to the top of the head must measure between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (50% to 69% of the total photo height).
  • Eye Height: Eyes must be positioned between 1 1/8 inches and 1 3/8 inches (56% to 69%) from the bottom of the photo.
  • Background: Plain white or off-white background with zero shadows, patterns, or objects.
  • Pose & Expression: Directly facing the camera with a neutral facial expression and both eyes open.
  • No Eyeglasses: Eyeglasses are prohibited unless accompanied by a signed medical certificate.
