What to Expect (Quality & Detail)

Size, in numbers: 2 inches is 51 mm. At 300 DPI that is 600 × 600 pixels. A 4x6 inch sheet at 300 DPI is 1200 × 1800 pixels, which fits several 2x2 photos.

Before you use it for an official application: This tool resizes and crops a photo. It does not check whether your photo meets the rules of a specific application. Those rules often cover: the background colour and lighting, how large the head must appear in the frame, facial expression, glasses and head coverings, and the file format and maximum file size for online submissions.

Rules differ by country and by type of application, and they change. Check the current instructions from the official source before you submit (see official photo requirements from travel.state.gov US Visa & Passport Photos and the OCI Services Portal — last checked: October 2026).

If a portal also limits the file size, make the 2x2 photo here, then use Compress JPG to bring it under the limit.

Tips for Hitting an Exact Size

  • Use plain, even lighting, with no shadows on your face or the wall behind you.
  • Hold the camera at eye level, not from above or below.
  • Use a plain light background (the tool includes clean white and off-white background options).
  • Take the photo at the highest resolution, then crop. Do not enlarge a small photo.
  • Printing on a 4x6 sheet: Choose "4x6" or "no scaling" in the print dialog and turn off "fit to page", otherwise the printer may resize the photos and they will no longer measure 2x2 inches. After printing, measure one photo with a ruler.
